HI All,

This blog is just to clear some basic doubts about Vastu based constructions tecniques. Also clears major doubts regarding plan creation and designing a new house.
We basically from kerala and completd more than 1000 plot evaluations and vastu remedies for old buildings.

VASTU SUGGESTIONS

What are the things that should be observed while choosing land for building house?

• The house can be built anywhere where the rising sun’s shadow doesn’t fall.
• The house should be built perfectly according to north south and east west direction. It should not deviate from these directions.
• The house should be built according to the main directions and should not deviate from these main directions.
• To see the rising sun without hindrance the east should be at a low level. In the night as the stars (saptharshi) are of importance it is excellent (uttamam) to have a slant towards north. In short for house construction it is excellent to choose land which has a slant towards east and north. However, slant towards west and south is considered bad (adhamam).
• It is best to construct house in the southern part of the river that flows from west to east. That means the river flowing anticlockwise along the northern side of the land chosen to build the house is a very good sign for habitable land. Likewise the shore of the river that flows from north to south can also be considered habitable. For the land that has shmashanadosham rituals like khananaadhi shudhi, punyaham, vastubali, navadhanyam vidhaikal should be observed as a remedial measure according to the land’s structure.
• While choosing plot to build house near temple or any places of worship, it should be noted that the plot should not face the four main entrances of the temple (that is not facing the darshanam).

How can we calculate the position (sthaanam) for building the house?
• If we divide the land chosen to build the house into four parts, the northeast part and southwest part are considered excellent (uttamam) to build the house.
• If the plot is a small one, the house should be built in such a way that the center of the house should not come at the centre of the plot. The house should be built in such a way that the center of the house should either come at southwest part or northeast part of the plot.
• If the plot is a large one, considering a square shaped thing that confines to that place it should be divided into four parts taking into consideration the east west bhramasuthram and south north yamasuthram. In that either in the northeast part or southwest part, the position for house could be decided without hindering the brahma-yama sutras. For houses built in such a way karnasuthra from southwest corner to the northeast corner should also be avoided from getting hindered.
• For small plots, according to the alpakshetravidhi of vastushastra, a rectangular or square shape should be considered that confines into the whole land avoiding the pishachaveedhi. The centre of the house (grihamadhyam) should deviate from the center of the plot (vastumadhyam) towards northeast or southeast.
• For ekashala houses, according to the entrance of the house, grihamadhyasuthram should not get hindered with walls, pillars or toilet instead to leave it free, doors and windows should come in its way. For padinjattipura the grihamadhyasuthram is in the east west direction and for thekkinipura the grihamadhyasuthram is in the north south direction.

Which are the most appropriate trees that are to be planted around the house and what their advantages?

The trees can be divided primarily into four:-

1. Bhahisara: coconut tree (thengu), areca nut (kavungu)
2. Anthasara: jackfruit tree (plaavu), mango tree (maavu)
3. Sarvasara: teak (thekku), tamarind (puli)
4. Nissara: drum stick (muringa), milk plant (paala), tapioca
(poola)

• Those trees coming under the fourth group are not good to be planted near the house. Coconut tree, mango tree, areca nut and jackfruit tree are the important trees that could be planted anywhere around the house.
• East – peraal, south – fig (atthi), west – pipal (arayaal), north – itthi. These are called nalpamaram. If these trees lie out of their stated places, it will create opposite effects.
• Trees like kumizhu, koovalam, kadukkamaram, gooseberry tree (nelli), Deodar tree (devadaru), jackfruit tree (plaavu), Ashoka tree (ashokam), sandal tree (chandanam), timber (veenga), chembakam, black wood (karingali) could be planted at either sides of the house. The plants that are important for their flowers like plantain (vaazha), jasmine plant (mulla), jasmine (pichakam) could be planted anywhere.

What is the importance of eeshanakon, agnikon, vayukon, nirurthikon while building a house?

• The northeast corner of the land is known as eeshanakon, southeast corner agnikon, northwest corner vayukon, and southwest corner nirurthikon.
• In vasthusastra dhikpalakas has got great importance. Agnikon (agnipadam) is the place of fire, eeshanakon (eeshanapadam) is the place of water, vayukon (vayupadam) is the place of air, and nirurthikon (nirurthipadam) is the place of sky. Vastu is the union of panchabhootham with fire, water, air, and sky in four corners and earth in the middle. As a result the science is that earth contains everything. It has got all the five qualities of panchabhootham.
• The quality of sky is sound. Air originates from sky. The quality of air is the touch. The breeze has got sound and the touching feel. Fire is produced from air. Fire will have form, sound and touch. Water has got taste together with all the above said qualities. Among panchabutham the important quality of earth’s own is smell. Earth has got all five qualities (sound, touch, form, taste and smell). We get all the qualities of the solar system only from earth. If earth is taken as an object altogether whatever goodness and defects that earth has all these could be perceived in a 5 cent land that is the part of the earth.
• Agnikon suggests instability. As the line from agnikon to vayukon is mruthyusuthram if house is built in this line the house can be ruined by fire.

What are the aspects that should be taken into consideration while constructing “nadumuttam” and “mullathara”?

• Nadumuttam (anganam) could be built either in a square or rectangular shape. If the nadumuttam is in a rectangular shape the length should always extend to the north-south direction. The length elongating in an east west direction is not proper. The south north direction for nadumuttam is considered proper as it is vertical to the earth’s rotation.
• The position of mullathara should be in the north east corner of nadumuttam. Even if the mullathara does not come within the boundary of nadumuttam, it should be built in the north east front yard of the house.
• If a line is drawn from the south west corner to the north east corner of the lawn, the middle portion of thulasithara should not come in the one fourth of northeast portion of the line in the nadumuttam.
• It has been mentioned before that for houses with Eekashala, either thekkini or padinjattini is important. For houses with significance for thekkini will have its lawn in the northern side. So for thekkini, the thulasithara should be built towards the east from the middle portion of the northern front yard. According to this, it is believed that for padinjatti, the lawn should be in the eastern side. This suggests that for the houses situated in the western side, the thulasithara should be built towards the northern side from the middle portion of eastern front yard.
• While building thulasithara, the one aspect that should be taken into account is that the height of thulasithara should not exceed the height of the plinth level (thara) of the house.
• In the case of thekkinipura, the thulasithara would be situated in the northern side of the front yard. The space for lighting the vilakku should be provided in the southern side of thulasithara in such a way that the vilakku could be viewed from the house.
• Likewise for the thulasithara situated in the eastern frontyard of the house, the space for lighting the vilakku should be provided in the western side of the thulasithara in such a way that the vilakku could be viewed from the house.
• The thulasithara built in the northeast frontyard of the house should have space on all four sides so as to do the prathakshinam around the thulasithara. This suggests that the thulasithara should not be built conjoining the boundary. It is believed to be the destiny of rajas (kings) to build mullathara in the center of nadumuttam. So it is not appropriate for common man to build mullathara in the center of nadumuttam because by doing so it is indicated that he is declaring himself as a king.

What all should be looked into while placing the kattila (door frame)?

• During the construction of a house in the initial, middle and final stages, four instances namely grihaarambham, kattilavaippu, uttaramvaipu (varkapani) and grihapravesham are observed in accordance with the muhoortham.
• The place where kattila is to be established should be sanitized by sprinkling punyaham obtained from the temple. The kattila too should be sanitized accordingly. Following this, lay sandal and flowers on kattila and the place where kattila is to be fixed. Swarnashakalam could be kept under kattila. Always fix the kattila of the front door first. According to vasthusasthram for the kattilavaippu ceremony, the main kattila or the kattila that opens to north or east should be placed. It is not at all advisable to build the walls and cast the lintel before fixing the kattila. It is most appropriate to fix the main kattila formally.
• It is not advisable to establish kattila in the middle of the house. This means that kattila should never come in the middle of the house. For the thekkini, kattila in the northern part is appropriate. The middle portion of the house and the middle portion of kattila should never come in the same line. Likewise the middle portion of two kattilas should never come in the same line.

  1. I read somewhere that nadumuttam should not be constructed below the floor level as we usually see them.Because the central portion is brahmasthanam and it should not be built below the floor level and if done so that it will bring severe consequrnces to the family. Is that right.? If so then what is the solution. Please reply.Thank you.
